Medusa: avoid Petrifying Gaze and claim her key

Turn Rose away from Medusa’s gaze, distinguish it from melee and tail attacks, and claim the Prophetess’s Key and Petrifying Gaze after the fight.

Edited by Updated

How do you avoid Medusa’s Petrifying Gaze?

Turn Rose to face away from Medusa when the gaze is released. The gaze’s damaging check tests whether Rose is facing Medusa, and it bypasses ordinary dodge and parry checks. Moving while still looking at the boss does not replace turning away.

Watch the boss’s position before choosing which way to face. When she changes sides, the safe facing direction changes with her. Stop attacking through the gaze, face away, and resume after the attack ends.

Do the other attacks use the same answer?

Medusa also has close-range melee and tail-slam attacks, and can submerge to change sides. Facing away answers the gaze condition; it does not protect Rose from these physical attacks. Watch for a separate melee or tail wind-up before moving back into range.

As a positioning suggestion, leave enough space to step away from melee and avoid fighting directly on a platform edge. After a side change, locate her again before attacking so your next movement and facing input match the new position.

Where is the Medusa encounter?

Medusa’s encounter is in Ossuary of the Innocents, Holy Innocents’ Cemetery. The Hollow Tree clue points you toward the roots below the tree. Use the boss room link to locate the encounter rather than treating the clue’s pickup location as the arena.

Guardian’s Gaze is the clue about the danger of looking at the monster’s eyes. Read it together with the turning instruction above; its illustration is a clue image, not a screenshot of Rose’s safe position.

Which rewards matter after the battle?

Complete the reward-orb interaction after the encounter to claim the Prophetess’s Key and Petrifying Gaze. The key is one of the three keys used at the Catacombs gate; you also need The Fallen’s Key and The Warrior’s Key.

Petrifying Gaze is The Prophetess’s spell. Its Work of Mercy involving fatal falls asks for the fall to defeat a petrified airborne enemy. That task is separate from surviving the boss’s own gaze, so check the task wording before planning a collection or combat detour.
