Why does the Doppelganger regain health?
The Doppelganger’s mirror phase includes healing applied to the boss itself. Seeing its health recover during this sequence is consistent with the encounter’s mechanics. It does not mean that Rose has lost the damage already dealt through an inventory mistake. Watch for the change in the boss’s behaviour, and reassess the current phase before spending another large portion of your mana.
The mirror-phase entry uses remaining-health conditions around 85% and 40%, together with the current combat phase and other encounter conditions. Those figures help explain when the behaviour can become relevant; they are not two extra health bars or promises that an opening appears immediately at an exact percentage. Recognize movement and close-range counters
Outside the mirror sequence, the Doppelganger can use a melee chain, a whip approach, retreats and repositioning. Its close-range responses include a counterattack. As a practical approach, use attacks that leave you able to react, then check whether it is retreating, preparing a counter or closing the gap. Repeating a long sequence just because the previous hit connected can make it harder to respond.
When it changes position, find the boss again before choosing your facing and next movement. Maintain enough space to leave close range if the exchange becomes unfavourable. These are positioning suggestions, not a claim that a particular corner or distance prevents every move. Judge the next attack by what the boss is doing now rather than by where it stood before the mirror sequence.
Handle healing without abandoning the fight plan
Prepare enough health and mana to continue after a mirror phase. If you see healing, avoid turning frustration into an uninterrupted attack attempt while the encounter is changing. Identify when normal exchanges resume, then rebuild damage through openings you can recognize. Keeping control of Rose is a more useful immediate goal than trying to recover every lost point of boss health in one action.
The fight takes place after the four virtue trials in Notre-Dame. Each trial entrance needs its associated spell equipped, and its virtue is claimed by striking the bell at the end. Complete all four before returning to the central encounter. The virtue route and the Doppelganger fight are connected goals, but finding a trial entrance alone is not the same as finishing its trial.
Claim The Self and prepare Absolution
After defeating the Doppelganger, complete the reward-orb interaction to obtain The Self and Absolution. Inspect the new spell in the equipment menu before continuing toward the final encounters. The reward gives you an important option for the ending route, but it does not by itself disarm the Cursed Horologium or complete the separate requirements described in the endings guide.
Absolution requires full mana to start and consumes all mana on release. Normal spell cost reductions do not remove that requirement. If your next objective is the true-ending route, prepare the spell and your mana before the final fight, and use the dedicated ending instructions for the post-battle casting window. Questions players ask
Is the healing caused by Rose’s equipment?
The verified mirror sequence applies healing to the Doppelganger itself. Recognize that phase before changing your whole equipment plan. Review your next attack and resources when the fight resumes; the recovery alone is not evidence that a particular weapon has made the boss unbeatable.
Does 40% health guarantee an immediate mirror transition?
The life condition is combined with other encounter and phase conditions. It indicates when that entrance can qualify, not a fixed countdown or a guaranteed opening. Keep reacting to the current animation and positioning instead of stopping because the bar has reached an expected value.
Why can I not enter the central encounter after visiting the trials?
Check that each trial was completed and that its ending bell was struck. Visiting an entrance or clearing only part of its route is a different action. Revisit the virtue route guide and match each required spell and bell to the trial you actually finished.
I have Absolution; why does it not cast?
Equip Absolution and restore mana to full. Its starting requirement differs from ordinary fixed-cost spells, and normal mana-cost reductions do not bypass it. For the true ending, also follow the separate route conditions and the casting-window instructions after the final battle.
