Why does the listed cost not tell the whole story?
Life Drain normally needs at least 5 mana to start, but does not take those 5 points as an upfront payment. While channeling at normal game speed, it spends 20 mana per second and stops when mana runs out. Treat 5 as a starting threshold rather than the price of maintaining the spell.
Chronomantic Dive has a base initial cost of 50 mana, followed by 10 mana per second during its upward phase at normal game speed. A longer rise therefore uses more than the initial 50. For either spell, decide how much time you intend to sustain it before spending the rest of your mana elsewhere.
Lich’s Mark or Infernal Medallion?
Lich’s Mark reduces mana cost by 40% when you cast again within 1.5 seconds of the previous cast. It suits closely spaced casts; a long pause does not satisfy its window. Infernal Medallion instead limits mana capacity to 80% and reduces spell cost by a flat 10 points.
For a hypothetical ordinary 35-mana cast, a 40% reduction is 14 points, while a flat reduction is 10. For a 15-mana cast, 40% is 6. These calculations compare each listed reduction separately, before other effects; they do not establish a combined stacking formula or replace a spell’s channel cost.
Recover mana through actions you already perform
Grim Token restores 5 mana on a successful parry. Nightshade restores 40% of maximum mana when a healing potion is used. Revenant’s Shard increases mana recovery from defeated enemies by 10%. Parrying, drinking and defeating are distinct triggers; ordinary hits do not substitute for all three.
Banshee’s Wail returns 1 mana per damage point received. That converts a loss of health into mana; it does not prevent the damage. As an equipment choice, favour a trigger you already perform reliably, then consider whether your next destination has groups to defeat or only a single durable boss.
Why is Absolution different?
Absolution requires full mana before casting can begin, consumes all current mana on release, and ignores normal spell-cost reductions. Restoring only a small amount of mana or equipping a usual cost-reduction relic does not remove that requirement.
For its ending use, prepare the spell before the final fight and follow the Four Virtues and endings guide for the actual casting window. Having sufficient mana and casting at the correct story moment are separate requirements.
