How do you pull the sword from the Chapel?
In Notre-Dame’s Chapel, equip Fist of Talos, the spell belonging to The Builder. Stand at the sword and use its interaction. The sword checks which Arcana spell is equipped; completing this interaction leads into Arthur’s encounter.
First obtain The Builder and its spell from Talos’s reward orb. Simply owning the card does not substitute for equipping the spell at the sword. The Chapel room link below locates the encounter; the inscription is a separate clue within that room.
Fist of Talos or Smash: which one is needed?
Choose the Fist of Talos spell in the equipment menu before interacting. Smash is the exploration ability performed with Down + Jump in the air; it is used for cracked floors and the workshop statue. These powers share a connection to Talos but perform different jobs.
The inscription talks about great strength, virtue and heart. For this interaction, the actionable requirement is the equipped spell. Follow that requirement instead of interpreting the inscription as a reason to grind an arbitrary attack statistic.
Prepare for Arthur before using the interaction
The sword interaction starts an encounter rather than immediately placing Excalibur in your inventory. Recover before committing to it and leave room to move. Arthur uses a shield, high and low melee attacks, a jumping shield slam and light rays.
His shield can change position in reaction to attacks on his head and feet. As a practical approach, watch the shield before committing to another sequence of attacks, and choose an exposed target instead of repeating the same attack into the guard. Reposition when he prepares a jump or a light-ray attack.
When do you actually receive Excalibur?
After defeating Arthur, complete the reward-orb interaction. The rewards include Excalibur and Stained-Glass Shield, associated with The Brittle King. Defeating the boss and claiming the orb are separate actions.
Excalibur is an equippable two-handed sword whose charged attacks fire light projectiles. Stained-Glass Shield is a spell. Open their separate entries to compare controls, costs and effects after the encounter.
