Enter the Courage trial with the required spell
The Courage trial in Notre-Dame includes a rematch with an enhanced Joan of Arc. Equip Infernal Pyre from The Warrior before interacting with the unfinished trial entrance. Owning the Arcana and having the required spell currently equipped are different checks. If the entrance does not admit you, inspect your selected spell before searching for another doorway or repeating the first Joan encounter.
This encounter uses its own combat behavior, so the tower-summit guide should not be treated as a complete rematch solution. Begin with enough health and recovery to observe the follow-ups. The map reference identifies the Courage trial room, while the four-virtues guide explains how this trial fits the other entrances and the central route.

Read the follow-up after a melee preparation
The rematch has distinct spinning, middle-range and farther-reaching melee preparations. Their release actions include ordinary and strengthened alternatives. A familiar preparation therefore does not guarantee that the following attack will match an earlier attempt. Watch the release and its continuation before committing to a long attack animation, especially when you are trying to recover health or regain a safe position.
The strengthened alternatives are associated with Joan’s flame-empowered condition, rather than being arbitrary extra names for the same strike. The fireball-pillar action applies that empowerment to Joan. Use the change as a reason to watch later melee attacks more carefully. This does not establish a fixed order of every move or a universal number of hits before the next attack.
A jump can continue into a dive and ground fire
One linked attack begins with a jump and continues into a dive. The dive also creates a flaming ground area that spreads to both sides. Treat the landing and the resulting ground hazard as connected parts of the attack. Moving away from the initial descent is only one part of reading the sequence; check the nearby floor before immediately returning to attack.
As a conservative tactic, keep enough room to change position and avoid planning your recovery around the instant Joan touches down. Respond to the actual fire and the next animation, then take an opening you can recognize. The diagram below summarizes the confirmed relationship between preparation, dive and ground fire; it is an explanation of the attack, not a screenshot or a tested safe-standing position.
- Jump preparation
- Dive
- Ground fire spreads to both sides
After winning, continue to the virtue bell
Defeating Joan is part of completing the Courage trial, but victory alone does not replace ringing the bell at its end. Continue through the trial and strike that bell to obtain the virtue. If the central route remains unavailable, check the virtues you actually received, including the final bell interaction, instead of assuming the rematch automatically awarded everything.
Use the encounter to pursue the trial objective rather than expecting a second copy of the first fight’s rewards. The first Joan guide covers that earlier encounter, while the four-virtues page covers the combined requirement. This page’s attack relationships come from game data. Use them to recognize continuations, then respond to the visible attack and fire before committing to a long action. Leave enough health to observe the later moves while learning.
Questions players ask
I own the card. Why is the entrance still closed?
The unfinished entrance checks the currently equipped spell. Choose Infernal Pyre from The Warrior, then interact again. Card ownership is not the same as selecting the required spell. If you do not yet have that power, use its acquisition guide before returning to the trial.
Can I use the first Joan fight’s attack order?
The rematch has its own active behavior and linked attack alternatives. Use the first guide for that earlier encounter, then read the rematch’s actual releases and follow-ups here. Repeatedly seeing one move does not prove that the entire encounter follows a fixed order or an identical chain every time.
Why am I hit after avoiding the dive?
The dive is linked to a ground-fire effect spreading to both sides. Check the floor and the continuing attack rather than treating the first descent as the whole sequence. Reposition before returning to offense; this guide does not identify a single stationary spot that is safe for every version of the attack.
I won. Why do I still lack the Courage virtue?
Continue to the trial’s end and strike its virtue bell. Entering the trial and defeating Joan do not replace that interaction. After receiving the virtue, check the other three trials separately if you are pursuing the central route; each unfinished trial still has its own required completion and bell.
